Another day, but definitely not just another car museum.
Don't misunderstand me. There are some great car museums out there, but this one will touch your heart a little. Like many of the best car museums this is a collection of cars that kind of happened to a fellow petrol head.
Mr Carol Galea, to be precise. He started out playing around with cars to enter hill climbing races, but ended up building a collection of his own. The collection is includes what may well be Mr Galea's own fathers car - a rather rare Austin Somerset cabriolet.
It is difficult to describe this collection of about 100 cars, plus a lot of other memorabilia. But the best thing to do is to pop over and see it for yourself! The Malta Car Museum has a website, which you can visit here . You can find them on Facebook, too.
The location of the museum, in Tourists Street, Qawra, Malta is quirky but brilliant. A tiny entrance on a street corner, with some steps leading down to a underground treasure trove of motoring nostalgia. It is a must visit if you get to Malta. As you go into the museum fresh caverns open up, and despite being underground it is well clean, very clean, and very well presented, with good amounts of information on each car. Here you can indulge you memories, you can learn, and you can see some very well preserved -and restored- cars.
Oh yes. You even get a glimpse into the workshop where some of the restoration work happens.
As an Alfa Romeo fan I was especially spoiled, but the range of cars here is good, including a Ford Anglia, a couple of Fiat 500's (the original one), the inevitable Jaguar E type's, and many others. Some are a bit rare, too.
There is, for example, a Ford Thunderbird. Mr Galea is the second owner of this vehicle, the first was Dick Van Dyke!
And a warning. A small number of these are for sale. Do not take your wallet unless you have massive levels of self control!
You will be met at the door by friendly faces, and you might even see Mr Galea himself on the premises, but mostly you will, as we were, be very pleased that you stopped to visit. It definitely exceeds expectations.
If you visit Malta, make sure you get the Malta Car Museum on your itinerary, and ensure you leave yourself enough time to browse slowly. Obviously, check the opening hours before you set off.
We are happy snappers!
