Cromer - lots of ice creams and an upset golfer
Cromer is a magical place towards the north of Norfolk. It sits on the coast facing north, despite being on the east coast. This creates a situation where you can see both the sunset and the sunrise over the same bit of sea.
That, of course, is just an example of why Cromer holds the hearts of so many. Announce a visit there and all the hands will go up from all the Cromer fans.
This years visit, like so many before, delivered the Cromer weather. Whilst the forecasters announced universal deluges, Cromer in July delivered sunshine everyday. Sitting outside the van, watching sunsets so amazing that people gathered on the cliff edge just to watch.
You cannot record everything that happens on a Cromer trip. There will be too much. This year we made the walk up to the lighthouse, on the headland to the east into between Cromer and Overstrand. The footpath skirts the edge of the golf course, and one of the players noticed us walking there. He because so angry he started to run towards us waving our arms. We carried on, and his run fizzled out. His next shot resulted in a lost ball amongst the deep and lush vegetation, so I am guessing his opponent was glad of the distraction.
You should walk up to the light house, though. Mostly, because of the view as you walk back down to the town - it is the best view of Cromer anywhere. The golfer will be in the bar by now. And look at the green all around. And although I cannot promise it, we were confronted with a huge display of butterflies for the walk there and back.
Back at sea level and just to the east of the pier is an ice cream cafe. You know, a posh ice cream stall. It lists, on a notice outside, an impossible range of flavours, bring back memories of hedgehog flavoured crisps. With this difference. The flavours were real. It is a must visit place, I think, because ginger and rhubarb flavoured ice cream is a missing piece in the puzzle of life.
All the other Cromer stuff is there, of course. The pier, with people catching crabs off the side of it. The beach that disappears at high tide, but offers a great beach day when the waters recede. The Red Lion Hotel with its big range of ales and great food. All of it - well all apart from the goats that were not there this year.
This is a great corner of a great county, and its appeal goes beyond the list of things you can see and do. The place gets to you, and welcomes you, and makes you promise to return.
You will return, you know.
We are happy snappers!
