Glasson Dock. Forgotten, but alive
Not so many people will have heard of Glasson Dock. Not so many people will have been there.
We love to explore places like that. Because they are fascinating. Whilst people are not noticing them, people are still living there, and if you pause to look they are awash with interest.
In Glasson, however, it is easier than average to find it. Get out the car. Take a stroll about the place. And feast on the obvious interest that is there, not even beneath the surface.
Oh. Some facts first. Glasson is a small village in Lancashire, with a population of less than 1000 sitting on the mouth of the River Lune. The river, if you watch through binoculars, can achieve a small tidal bore - just another bit of interest here.
In the village is the harbour. Like all harbours it can look at bit derelect, but there is stuff happening there. And behind the harbour is a very large marina, filled with some very nice boats. You can walk past all this, eventually, and walk up a small hill and you get a view right over the bay to the Lake District. On a clear day you can see Helvellyn. How cool is that? On the way back, take the time to pop into the Port of Lancaster Smokehouse. They have smoked everything in here, and you need some of this stuff because it is very good indeed.
There are some decent eating places, too, and you soon forget the boat that has sunk on its moorings in the harbour and fall just a little bit in love with the place.
And that is before you venture out the village and notice the extensive grasslands by the edge of the Lune, or notice you can walk by the Lune all the way into Lancaster (for the more adventurous), or notice the intriguing tidal action as the tide rises and falls.
You could easily drive past Glasson. In fact, the road pretty much does that. But you don't have to.
